How to get in shape – harness your enthusiasm

In January of every year, new clients come to Muddy Plimsolls seeking guidance on how to get in shape. They use their New Year’s resolutions as a way of focusing on specific goals. Whatever helps, helps and we love helping people keep the promises that they’ve made to themselves!

The start of the process is to think about what type of training would fire up their enthusiasm, and not dampen it down. Fitness training ought to suit the client and before we start with a new client, we ask them to complete a questionnaire to determine their “fitness personality“.

Then we talk through the kind of short term, ‘easy’ goals that can be achieved in four weeks. We base our tinning around the four week level to encourage the early enthusiasm. Four weeks is a short enough period to see the end of it, but long enough to make real differences to one’s abilities and body composition.

A review at the end of their first Training Plan allows clients to note their successes and plan their next training period.

This kind of training structure breaks down any goal into bite-sized pieces.  The plan-and-review process is the difference between ineffective exercise and Muddy Plimsolls’ style of fitness coaching.
