Local Fitness Coach, Jason Doggett, believes the first step to fitness shouldn’t be about warm-up exercises and a stopwatch – but rather a chat over a cup of tea.

‘Drop and gimme ten!  Kiss that dirt.’  An intimidating figure stands over you barking orders, blowing a whistle, watching you struggle with a set of exercises face-down in the mud.  This militant approach to fitness, popularized by reality tv shows like The Biggest Loser, is becoming increasingly common among personal trainers and bootcamp instructors.  But Fitness Coach and local business-owner, Jason Doggett, prefers to start training with a chat over a cup of tea.

‘Getting to know you, before jumping straight in, is important,’ Jason says.  ‘Fitness is not a comfort-zone for most people.  We didn’t all get picked for the school team. There’s often a lot of the emotional tied up in the physical.  I find the best first step is talking and listening.’

‘Discussing fitness goals or weight loss with a stranger can be stressful, so I try to make the atmosphere as comfortable and familiar as possible.  That’s why I try to meet a client for the first time over a cup of tea, whether it’s in a coffee shop on Primrose Hill or Marylebone High Street, or around a home kitchen table.’

If the environs were more commonplace, like standing beside the reception desk on the floor of a mainstream gym, it would be a different story.  Jason believes that chatting over a cup of tea, draws out more of an individual’s personality and better reveals why they’re seeking fitness training.

‘Sometimes you’ll have a definite goal in mind, like running in a charity event or climbing a mountain,’ says Jason. ‘Sometimes it’s more hidden than that, like wanting to learn to how to cartwheel or step off the tube without tripping over everybody. Listening to this real world stuff and creating a fitness training programme out of that, is the art.’
